World Cup 2026: US Visa rejections hit Senegal football officials

Just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, several officials from the Senegalese Football Federation have reportedly been denied US visas. The situation has sparked concern within Senegalese football circles, with fears that the Senegal national football team could travel to the tournament without part of its leadership delegation. According to reports, six federation officials were refused visas by the US Embassy in Dakar, including the federation’s fourth vice-president, Amadou Kane.

Senegal FA hopes for diplomatic solution

Among those affected is Moussa Mbaye, president of Stade de Mbour and member of the federation’s executive committee. Speaking on the issue, Moussa Mbaye expressed surprise over the decision, explaining that US authorities had initially indicated there would be flexibility regarding visas for official World Cup delegations. “In the specific context of the World Cup, the US State Department had indicated that flexibility would be granted, particularly through visas for essential and official personnel,” he said.

According to him, the interpretation of the term “official” may have differed between Senegalese football authorities and US consular services. The Senegalese Football Federation had submitted a collective visa application and is now expected to reopen discussions with American consular authorities in hopes of reversing the refusals.

Civil society group condemns the decision

The Senegalese civil society organization Horizons Sans Frontières has also criticized the visa refusals.

The issue reportedly extends beyond football executives, as several journalists and supporters have also failed to obtain visas to travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The case has reignited debate over travel restrictions and access to major international sporting events.

Senegal preparing for tough World Cup group

At the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Senegal national football team will compete in Group I alongside the France national football team, the Norway national football team and the Iraq national football team.
