Moroccan King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to Senegalese football supporters convicted following incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco. The announcement was made through an official statement from the Royal Cabinet ahead of Eid al-Adha. According to the statement, the decision was taken on “humanitarian grounds” and reflects the longstanding relations between Morocco and Senegal.
The Senegalese supporters were convicted over offenses committed during AFCON 2025, hosted by Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026. The royal pardon is widely seen as a diplomatic gesture aimed at reinforcing ties between Rabat and Dakar at a time when sport plays an increasingly important role in African relations. King Mohammed VI also sent Eid greetings to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the Senegalese people.
AFCON 2025 was one of the continent’s biggest sporting events, attracting supporters from across Africa and showcasing Morocco’s growing stature as a sports powerhouse. While the tournament was largely praised for its organization and infrastructure, some incidents involving supporters led to arrests and legal proceedings. The royal decision now sends a message of reconciliation and African solidarity beyond football itself.
