Burkina Faso suspends beauty pageants pending regulatory review

Beauty pageants have been put on hold across Burkina Faso after the Ministry of Culture announced the suspension of all such competitions while authorities review their regulatory framework. The decision, made public on Monday, June 8, is part of a broader effort by the government to ensure that cultural events align more closely with national values and the principles promoted under the country’s current political agenda. As a result, no new beauty contests, including Miss competitions, will be authorized until further notice.

Protecting Cultural Identity

According to the Ministry of Culture, the suspension is intended to safeguard Burkina Faso’s cultural identity and ensure that public events reflect the moral values and traditions of the nation. Officials believe that a reassessment of existing regulations is necessary to strengthen oversight and establish clearer guidelines for the organization of beauty pageants.

Review of Existing Rules

In an official statement, Noélie Congo Salouka, Director General of Culture and Arts, explained that the temporary suspension will provide authorities with the time needed to redesign the legal and administrative framework governing such events. The review is expected to focus on how beauty contests are organized, the standards they promote, and their compatibility with the country’s cultural and social objectives.

No Authorizations Until Further Notice

Until the review process is completed, organizers will not be granted authorization to hold beauty pageants anywhere in the country.

The move effectively brings all Miss competitions and similar events to a halt, marking a significant shift in the regulation of cultural and entertainment activities in Burkina Faso.

While authorities have not indicated how long the suspension will remain in place, they have made clear that future competitions will be subject to stricter oversight once a new framework is adopted.
