Ivory Coast police seek suspected fake journalist

The Côte d’Ivoire Police have launched a search for a man suspected of posing as a journalist at ceremonies in Abidjan in order to steal unattended belongings. According to the Police Secours Côte d’Ivoire, the suspect allegedly used a false journalist identity to gain access to events before taking advantage of items left without supervision. The authorities have called on anyone with information that could help identify or locate the suspect to report to the nearest police station.

What does Ivorian law say?

Theft is a criminal offence in Côte d’Ivoire, with the applicable penalty depending on the circumstances of the alleged offence, the value of the property involved, the method used and any aggravating factors.

In this case, investigators and the courts could also consider the alleged use of a false professional identity to gain access to private or restricted events, depending on the facts ultimately established.

It would therefore be premature to announce a specific sentence for the suspect before he is brought before the Ivorian justice system. The final legal classification of the alleged acts, as well as any potential sentence, will be determined by the judicial authorities.

Financial hardship does not justify theft

Several factors can sometimes contribute to criminal behaviour, including financial difficulties, unemployment, precarious living conditions, the search for easy money, social pressure, peer influence, addiction or previous offending. However, such circumstances may help explain certain forms of delinquency but do not constitute a justification for committing theft.

The Police Secours Côte d’Ivoire is urging anyone who may have information capable of helping identify or locate the suspect to contact the nearest police station.
