Four people were killed and more than 30 others injured on Monday, May 18, 2026, in Kenya during violent incidents linked to a nationwide public transport strike and protests over a recent fuel price hike, the Interior Minister has said. The unrest broke out as transport operators and commuters took part in disruptions triggered by rising fuel costs, which have sparked public anger across several parts of the country.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the casualties but did not specify where the deaths and injuries occurred or the exact circumstances surrounding the incidents. “The investigation will determine (…) whether they were innocent civilians (…) or criminals who died during their arrest,” he said.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the violence as tensions remain high over the economic impact of fuel price increases.
