Niger is strengthening its hydraulic infrastructure. Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine launched on Tuesday, October 06, the construction of a third drinking water treatment plant to strengthen the supply of Niamey.

The launch ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 in Karey Gorou. This locality is located on the right bank of the Niger River, about ten kilometers from the capital. The new infrastructure should allow an additional production of 100,000 m³ of drinking water per day. It is part of the master plan of the Niamey urban hydraulics. The project represents an investment of 166 billion FCFA. The work is planned over a period of 30 months and will be divided into nine batches. The program does not only concern the construction of the plant. It also provides for the strengthening and extension of drinking water supply networks, with an additional capacity of 47,200 m³. In addition, there is an operation of 45,000 social connections. According to the authorities, these connections must benefit about 450,000 people.

With this third plant, the Nigerian authorities want to respond to the growing needs for drinking water in the capital and sustainably improve the access of populations to this essential resource.
