South Africa: Femicide cases shock johannesburg region

A disturbing series of suspected femicides is sending shockwaves through the Johannesburg area in South Africa, after eight women were found dead within just three months, in several cases with their bodies found unclothed. The killings have triggered widespread anger and renewed calls for urgent action against gender-based violence, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a national priority.

Police have so far stopped short of confirming that the deaths are connected or that a single perpetrator is responsible. However, the cases have already prompted public discussion about a possible “Kempton Park serial killer”, referring to the town east of Johannesburg where some of the first victims were found.

Police launch special investigation

Between Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16, the reported death toll rose from six to eight victims. South African police have established a dedicated investigation team and are examining possible links between several of the cases.

The killings have sparked a strong public reaction across the country. Civil society organisations, political parties and members of the public have expressed outrage, while each newly discovered body has generated extensive media coverage and debate on social media.

Alongside calls for women to remain vigilant, many South Africans are demanding stronger action from law enforcement and the government.

Renewed pressure over gender-based violence

The latest deaths have also revived criticism over South Africa’s response to gender-based violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa made combating gender-based violence a national priority last year, including during discussions linked to South Africa’s G20 presidency. Activists and survivors, however, continue to argue that government commitments have yet to translate into sufficient changes on the ground.

The latest series of deaths has therefore reignited concerns over the scale of violence against women in the country and intensified calls for authorities to strengthen prevention, investigations and protection measures.

For now, investigators have not publicly established that the eight deaths are part of a single criminal operation. Police are continuing to examine the cases as the country awaits further findings.
