Gabon has taken a significant step toward developing one of Africa’s largest untapped iron ore deposits with the launch of construction works for a new mineral export port at Kobekobe, south of Libreville. President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially laid the foundation stone for the project, which is expected to become a key component of the country’s mining and industrial ambitions.
The future port will serve as the main export gateway for iron ore from Belinga, a massive deposit located more than 500 kilometers from the capital. Despite holding estimated reserves exceeding one billion tonnes, the site has remained largely undeveloped for decades due to its remote location and lack of transport infrastructure.
A Strategic Project for Central Africa
Spanning approximately 500 hectares, the Kobekobe facility is being promoted by authorities as one of the largest industrial and logistics hubs in Central Africa. Government projections indicate that up to 110 million tonnes of iron ore could pass through the port annually once operations reach full capacity. The development is seen as a critical step toward transforming Gabon into a major player in the global iron ore market, particularly as an Australian mining company prepares to begin exploitation of the Belinga deposit.
International Partners Join Forces
The construction of the port has been entrusted to Africa Global Logistics (AGL), but the project involves a broad coalition of international partners. Speaking at the ceremony, President Oligui Nguema outlined the multinational nature of the initiative. France, a long-standing partner of Gabon, will play a role through AGL and energy projects, while China is expected to build a 550-kilometer double-track railway linking Belinga to the coast.
The United States is set to contribute rolling stock, including locomotives and freight wagons, to transport the ore. Italy is expected to participate in the construction of a hydroelectric dam to power the railway system, while EDF will reportedly develop an additional dam to support mineral processing activities.
Thousands of Jobs Expected
Authorities believe the project could have a transformative impact on the national economy. Government estimates suggest the port and associated infrastructure could generate around 9,000 direct jobs and more than 100,000 indirect employment opportunities.
The announcement has already generated optimism among local communities, many of whom see the project as a long-awaited source of economic opportunity and regional development.
Residents have expressed hope that the large-scale investment will create employment, improve infrastructure, and stimulate business activity throughout the region.
Operations Expected Within Five Years
Beyond the port itself, the project includes the development of a railway network and new energy infrastructure, creating an integrated logistics corridor linking the Belinga mine to international markets.
According to current projections, the Kobekobe mineral port is expected to become operational within the next five years, marking a major milestone in Gabon’s strategy to diversify its economy and capitalize on its vast natural resources.
