Pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino continues to intensify after Portuguese football legend Luis Figo publicly called for his resignation, accusing the FIFA chief of putting personal interests ahead of the game and losing the confidence of football’s key stakeholders.
Figo joins growing opposition
Former Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo has become one of the highest-profile football figures to demand Gianni Infantino’s resignation.
In a strongly worded statement published on social media, Figo said he was joining others across football in calling for the FIFA president to step down.
Harsh criticism of FIFA president
The Portuguese legend accused Infantino of betraying the office he promised to strengthen.
« He has lied, deceived and sought to serve his own interests instead of the game he is supposed to protect, » Figo wrote.
He also claimed that Infantino had lost the confidence of senior FIFA officials, close advisers and many people working in football.
« It’s not too late to save football »
Figo concluded his statement by urging Infantino to resign immediately.
« It’s too late to save his dignity, but it’s not too late to save football. He should go. Now. »
The statement ended with the hashtag #InfantinoOut, adding further momentum to the growing campaign against the FIFA president.
