African Transfers: The big moves of summer 2026

The 2026 summer transfer window was particularly busy for African footballers, with several of the continent’s biggest talents attracting interest from Europe’s top clubs. Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé and Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi both broke the previous record for the most expensive African player, set at €81 million by Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo in 2025. From Real Madrid to Manchester City and Manchester United, several major deals made headlines this summer. Here are the biggest African transfers of the 2026 window.

Yan Diomandé – Real Madrid, €140 million

At just 19, Yan Diomandé completed the biggest African transfer in football history. The Ivorian winger joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to €140 million, including bonuses.

Diomandé had initially been linked with Paris Saint-Germain before the French club pulled out of negotiations. Real Madrid eventually secured his signature in one of the most eye-catching deals of the summer.

The transfer puts him well ahead of Bryan Mbeumo, whose €81 million move to Manchester United in 2025 had previously set the African record.

If all the bonuses in the agreement are triggered, Diomandé could also become Real Madrid’s most expensive signing, surpassing the €127 million the Spanish giants paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023.

The Ivorian enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with RB Leipzig last season, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists. He was also named Bundesliga’s best young player.

His arrival is part of Real Madrid’s major squad rebuild as the Spanish giants look to return to the top after two difficult seasons domestically and in Europe.

Ayyoub Bouaddi – Manchester City, €100 million

Ayyoub Bouaddi was another African player to break the record this summer. The 18-year-old Morocco international left Lille for Manchester City in a deal estimated at €100 million, including bonuses.

His impressive performances for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup attracted the attention of several European giants, but it was Manchester City who eventually won the race for his signature.

Bouaddi has therefore become the most expensive player ever to leave Ligue 1 and the second-most expensive African footballer in history, behind Diomandé.

“It was the ideal time to take the next step, and I think coming to City was the right decision,” Bouaddi said after completing his move.

The Moroccan midfielder now faces the major challenge of helping fill the void left by Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner who joined Barcelona.

Carlos Baleba – Manchester United, €80 million

Cameroon international Carlos Baleba also secured a major move this summer, joining Manchester United from Brighton for €80 million, including bonuses.

The 22-year-old midfielder already has three years of Premier League experience, having made 112 appearances for Brighton.

His move to Old Trafford comes at an important stage of his career. Manchester United are back in the Champions League after a two-year absence, giving Baleba the opportunity to play in Europe’s elite competition for the first time.

He will also link up with Cameroon teammate Bryan Mbeumo at club level.

Nicolas Jackson – Aston Villa, €75 million

Aston Villa made one of the biggest Premier League moves involving an African player by signing Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson for €75 million on August 28.

Jackson is expected to replace England international Ollie Watkins in the Villa attack after joining from Bayern Munich following a difficult season in Germany.

The move also gives the Senegal international the chance to reunite with Unai Emery, who worked with him at Villarreal when Jackson began his career in Spain in 2021.

“He was a key factor in my decision,” Jackson said of Emery. “When I arrived in Spain, I didn’t know much and he was very important to me from the beginning.”

With Emery now back in charge, Jackson will hope to rediscover his best form in England.

Ibrahim Mbaye – Aston Villa, €55 million

Aston Villa completed another major deal involving a Senegal international by signing Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for €55 million.

The young winger completed the move on September 1, just hours before the transfer window closed, as he looks for more regular playing time after spending the first two years of his professional career at PSG.

The 15-time Senegal international leaves Paris with an impressive collection of trophies, including two Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, a FIFA Intercontinental Cup and two Ligue 1 titles.

His next challenge will be adapting to the intensity of the Premier League and establishing himself as a regular starter at Villa.

Ismael Saibari – Bayern Munich, €55 million

Morocco also had another representative among the summer’s major transfers, with Ismael Saibari moving from PSV Eindhoven to Bayern Munich for €55 million, including bonuses.

The 25-year-old forward spent six years at PSV and impressed during the 2026 World Cup, where he scored three goals for the Atlas Lions.

His versatility in attack made him a priority for Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.

Saibari wasted little time making an impact. On his Bayern debut against Stuttgart on August 28, he came on after half-time and provided two assists in a convincing 5-1 victory.

His impressive start immediately raised expectations around the Moroccan forward as he begins a new chapter in Germany.

A record-breaking summer for African football

The 2026 transfer window once again highlighted the growing value of African football talent in Europe.

Yan Diomandé’s €140 million move to Real Madrid and Ayyoub Bouaddi’s €100 million switch to Manchester City both surpassed the previous African transfer record of €81 million, set by Bryan Mbeumo just a year earlier.

With Carlos Baleba, Nicolas Jackson, Ibrahim Mbaye and Ismael Saibari also completing major moves, African players were at the heart of one of Europe’s most active transfer windows.
