Cameroon: The ministry invalidates a doctoral defense

The Cameroonian Ministry of Higher Education raises the tone. A doctoral defense organized in Yaoundé by Victory University International was declared null and void.

The defense concerned a doctorate/PhD in Business Administration by Pierre Nkou Abina. It was held on September 29, 2026 in Yaoundé. In a press release dated October 6, the ministry specifies that Victory University International does not appear in the register of higher education institutions authorized to practice in Cameroon.

The ministry also recalls that the opening of Doctoral/PhD programs and the recruitment of students in these courses are now regulated by the National Doctoral Training Commission. Direct consequence: no diploma issued in Cameroon by Victory University International will be recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education. Teachers who participated in the jury of this defense are also reminded of their ethical and deontological obligations. The ministry indicates that academics who contribute to the legitimization of defenses organized by non-authorized organizations are exposed to sanctions.

The case thus relaunches the issue of the control of doctoral institutions and training offered on Cameroonian territory.
