Senegalese students will have to wait a few more days. The start of the school year, initially scheduled for October 7, is postponed to October 12 throughout the territory. The bad weather motivated this decision.

Senegalese students will finally not return to school on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The Ministry of National Education has announced the postponement of the start of the school year to Monday, October 12. The decision concerns the entire national territory. It comes after the heavy rains recorded in recent days and their consequences in several areas of the country. The ministry justifies this postponement by « the evolution of the meteorological situation ». It also mentions the need to guarantee the safety of students and to allow the continuation of cleaning and rehabilitation operations of schools.

Establishments still affected

Heavy rainfall has caused difficulties in several Senegalese localities. In Dakar in particular, areas have been affected by the floods. Some school infrastructures still need to be cleaned, sanitized or repaired before welcoming students. The postponement must therefore allow the authorities and the various actors to continue these interventions in better conditions. The decision also comes in a context where the Senegalese authorities have activated an emergency system in Dakar after the heavy rains. In particular, a regional emergency plan was triggered to respond to the difficulties related to the floods.

The new date is therefore set for Monday, October 12. Until then, the authorities will have to continue sanitation operations and monitor the evolution of weather conditions.
