Air pollution in South Africa: New app aims to protect citizens from rising health risks

South Africa is taking a technological step to address air pollution, as researchers from the University of the Witwatersrand develop a real-time alert application. Air pollution remains a major health issue. Data from Greenpeace indicates that exposure to fine particles caused around 42,000 deaths in 2023.

The app notifies users when pollution levels rise in their area, allowing them to take precautionary measures such as wearing masks or limiting outdoor activity. Monitoring stations across Johannesburg feed real-time data into the system.

Pollution driven by multiple factors

Experts point to traffic congestion, waste burning, and mining as key contributors to worsening air quality. Project leaders emphasize that public awareness is critical in the absence of rapid structural changes. Expected to launch in June, the application could become a key tool in addressing urban pollution across Africa. It reflects a growing trend of locally driven innovation tackling environmental and health challenges on the continent.
