Arsène Wenger has distanced himself from the controversial FIFA project linked to the future of the World Cup, stating that he was “not involved” and was not aware of the plans. The FIFA global football development chief said the decision to withdraw the project was “absolutely necessary and unquestionable” while calling for a FIFA built on “commitment, transparency and integrity”.

Wenger distances himself from controversial proposal

The pressure surrounding FIFA president Gianni Infantino continues to grow as senior figures within football’s governing body clarify their positions.

Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s head of global football development, has stated that he had no role in the preparation of the controversial World Cup-related project.

The former Arsenal manager said he was not involved in the discussions and was unaware of the plans before the proposal became public.

His comments represent another sign of concern within FIFA’s leadership structure.

Withdrawal of project was the right decision

Wenger believes removing the project was the correct decision.

“The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and unquestionable,” he said, according to reports.

The French football figure’s position comes after strong opposition from several football stakeholders and growing criticism of the initiative promoted by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Call for a more transparent FIFA

Beyond the controversy itself, Wenger focused on the importance of FIFA’s values.

He called for a governing body that “serves our sport with commitment, transparency and integrity”.

The statement adds further pressure on FIFA to address concerns about decision-making processes and internal governance.

Infantino faces growing political challenge

Wenger’s comments come at a difficult time for Gianni Infantino.

The FIFA president is already facing criticism from several member associations and internal figures following the collapse of the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.

With discussions about FIFA’s future leadership model intensifying, Infantino faces a major challenge to rebuild trust among football stakeholders.
