Cape Verde celebrates historic 2026 World Cup run

Cape Verde received a hero’s welcome after making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the island nation reached the knockout stage in its first-ever appearance at the global tournament. Home to just over 500,000 people and ranked 64th in the FIFA rankings before the competition, the West African nation exceeded expectations with a remarkable campaign that ended in the Round of 16.

The Blue Sharks bowed out after a thrilling 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in Miami, but their performance earned widespread admiration and sparked celebrations back home.

Speaking after the team’s return from the United States, head coach Bubista said the squad had proved its qualification was no accident.

« We showed that our qualification for the World Cup was not based on luck. We demonstrated hard work and resilience, and we left the United States with our heads held high, » he said.

Cape Verde’s Minister of Culture and Sports, Antonio Duarte, praised the players and coaching staff for strengthening the country’s international reputation, saying they had helped establish Cape Verde as « a great nation. »

The team’s arrival in the capital, Praia, coincided with the country’s 51st Independence Day, marking more than five decades since Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal. The timing added to the emotional atmosphere, with hundreds of supporters gathering at the airport to welcome the national heroes.

« After the heroes who fought for our independence, we now have these heroes: the Blue Sharks, » supporter Edmilson Correia told AFP during the celebrations.

Fans dressed in the team’s blue colours cheered as players greeted the crowd, with veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, attracting particular attention after becoming an international social media sensation thanks to his outstanding saves, especially during Cape Verde’s goalless draw against Spain in the group stage.

The national team is expected to take part in a victory parade through the streets of Praia before being officially received by the country’s president and other senior government officials, capping off a World Cup journey that has inspired the nation and elevated Cape Verde’s profile on the global football stage.
