A Nigerian Air Force plane crashed on Monday, October 05, 2026 in the state of Ondo. The initial toll of 32 people on board was revised to 25 deaths. No survivors were found.

Nigeria is in mourning after a serious plane crash. A Nigerian Air Force plane crashed on Monday, October 5, 2026 in the state of Ondo, in the south of the country. The aircraft was on a routine mission between Benin City and Lagos when it crashed near Igbokoda, in a swampy area. The plane was found near a naval base.

However, the balance sheet changed in the hours that followed. The first reports reported 32 people on board. The Nigerian Air Force then checked the passenger list and established that 25 people were finally in the aircraft: five crew members and 20 passengers.

No survivors found

Rescue was mobilized after the disappearance of the radar device. Search operations have made it possible to locate the wreck in the Igbokoda area. The Air Force confirmed that no survivors had been found. Among the victims were soldiers and relatives of members of the armed forces, according to information provided by the Nigerian authorities. Local witnesses reported hearing a particularly violent noise before the crash. Debris from the aircraft were found in an area near a stream.

However, the exact circumstances of the accident remain unknown. President Bola Tinubu ordered the opening of an investigation to determine the causes of the crash. The air force chief must supervise the investigations

A tragedy that raises questions

The crash comes in a context where the Nigerian army regularly uses aircraft for its transportation, surveillance and security operations. For the authorities, the priority is now to establish responsibilities and possible technical or operational failures. The review of the number of people on board also marked the first hours of the disaster. The authorities finally confirmed 25 victims, compared to 32 initially announced. A complete investigation will now have to establish the precise causes of the accident and determine the measures necessary to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
