Ligue 1 McDonald’s has chosen Cameroon as the starting point for its engagement strategy in French-speaking Africa. On October 25, Yaoundé will host the first watch party centred on the clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais. The initiative positions Cameroon as a testing ground for the French league’s broader ambitions across the continent.
Cameroon: A market to test new fan experiences
Cameroon has a strong football culture, with widespread public enthusiasm for the game and a French-speaking audience that closely follows Europe’s leading leagues. For the French Professional Football League (LFP), the country offers an opportunity to test new ways of engaging supporters.
As a pilot market, Cameroon will allow the organisers to experiment with different formats, assess audience responses and identify the activities that resonate most with fans. The initiative will also help explore how local brands and media outlets can contribute to the experience.
To deliver this first event, the LFP is working with 6Sports Marketing Advertising, an agency within the Quick-Witted Management (QWM) network, which brings local market knowledge and sports marketing expertise to the project.
A gateway to French-speaking Africa
The ambition extends beyond Cameroon. Lessons from this initial season could pave the way for further events in the country, followed by expansion into other French-speaking African markets.
By launching the initiative in Yaoundé, Ligue 1 McDonald’s is taking a first step towards building closer connections with football fans across the region, where the game is not merely a sport but also a powerful source of shared experiences and community engagement.
