Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, received Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita at the Marina Palace in Cotonou, where the Moroccan envoy delivered an official message from King Mohammed VI. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 7th Benin–Morocco Joint Cooperation Commission and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership.
King Mohammed VI reaffirms commitment to stronger ties
Following the meeting, Nasser Bourita said he had conveyed the warm greetings of King Mohammed VI, along with the Moroccan monarch’s determination to further deepen the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Rabat and Cotonou. The Moroccan foreign minister also congratulated Benin on the successful conduct of its recent elections and praised the country’s economic performance, describing Benin as a model of stability and resilience in West Africa.

Both countries agreed to give fresh momentum to their partnership by encouraging greater private-sector involvement, enhancing coordination between sectoral ministries, and accelerating the implementation of high-impact development projects. Security challenges in the Sahel discussed
Regional security was another major topic of the meeting. President Romuald Wadagni and Nasser Bourita exchanged views on the growing security challenges in the Sahel and the fight against terrorism. Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening African cooperation and improving regional coordination to preserve peace, security and stability across West Africa.
