Burkina Faso tightens grip on cultural events as 18 gatherings banned

Authorities in Burkina Faso have stepped up restrictions on the country’s cultural sector, banning 18 entertainment and cultural events in several cities. The measures are part of what the government describes as an effort to “clean up” the artistic and cultural sector.

Government targets cultural and entertainment events

Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Culture has issued formal notices to organisers of several events, effectively preventing them from taking place.

Among the events affected is Golden Moment, a gathering bringing together figures from the country’s showbiz industry. The event had been scheduled for 14 and 15 August at the Palais des Sports in Ouagadougou.

Another event caught up in the measures is Urban Vibes, a festival whose first edition was held in May in Bobo-Dioulasso, the country’s economic capital.

The festival combined entertainment with social initiatives. Its programme included performances by local artists, breast cancer awareness campaigns, road safety activities and tree-planting initiatives.

18 events suspended across the country

According to the Ministry of Culture, 18 events have been banned in different parts of Burkina Faso.

The authorities argue that the activities concerned are incompatible with public morality and could potentially undermine public order.

The latest restrictions form part of a broader policy described by the ministry as an “effort to clean up the artistic and cultural sector”, launched in March 2025.

The authorities have increasingly sought to impose tighter standards on cultural and entertainment activities, citing the need to ensure that public events reflect the country’s social and cultural values.

Beauty pageants also banned

The measures go beyond music festivals and entertainment gatherings.

At the beginning of June, the authorities also suspended women’s beauty pageants pending the adoption of new regulations.

The government said the future rules would be designed to bring such competitions more closely in line with “national cultural values.”

Almost two months later, however, the new regulations have yet to be released.

The latest wave of bans therefore adds to growing uncertainty within Burkina Faso’s cultural industry, as artists, event organisers and other professionals face increasingly restrictive rules governing public entertainment.

For organisers, the immediate concern is the growing difficulty of planning cultural events in a regulatory environment where authorities can suspend activities on public-order or cultural grounds.
