In Guinea, a local startup has developed a digital medical card designed to improve the way patients’ health records are managed. The digital “medical visa” brings together a patient’s medical information in one place and allows healthcare professionals to access the data when providing care. The initiative aims to address persistent problems in healthcare facilities, including lost medical files, missing medical information and patients having to repeat medical examinations because previous results cannot be found.
By centralising medical records, the technology could make patient follow-up more efficient while helping healthcare professionals make better-informed decisions. The project is part of a growing wave of digital health innovations across Africa, where technology is increasingly being used to address weaknesses in healthcare systems and improve access to medical services.
