Senegal has warmly reacted to the royal pardon granted by Moroccan King Mohammed VI to Senegalese supporters convicted after incidents linked to CAN 2026. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye praised the decision, calling it a humanitarian and compassionate gesture that reflects the deep ties between both nations. He confirmed that the affected citizens have been released and will soon return home to their families.

A gesture of reconciliation and African solidarity

The Senegalese leader highlighted the historic friendship between Senegal and Morocco, describing their relationship as one rooted in brotherhood and mutual respect. The pardon, announced during Eid al-Adha, is being widely interpreted as a strong message of reconciliation following tensions linked to the continental tournament. Senegalese football star Idrissa Gana Gueye also welcomed the decision. He expressed gratitude to the Moroccan King, calling the move “human, wise and calming,” and emphasized that it reinforces the unity between the two countries.

Football as a tool for African unity

The incident highlights once again the role of football in shaping diplomatic relations across Africa. Beyond competition, CAN 2026 becomes a platform for dialogue, reconciliation and stronger ties between African nations, with Morocco and Senegal standing as key partners in this dynamic.
