Gianni Infantino’s decision to withdraw FIFA’s controversial World Cup investment proposal has failed to end criticism. UEFA says the current FIFA leadership has lost its confidence, while the English FA is calling for a full review of FIFA governance.
The controversy surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino continues despite the withdrawal of the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.
Shortly after Infantino announced that FIFA was abandoning the plan to sell a stake linked to the World Cup, UEFA issued a strong statement questioning the current leadership of world football’s governing body.
“The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s trust, but also that of many other members of the football family,” UEFA said.
Governance concerns remain
The FIFA Forward Enterprise project had generated significant debate among football stakeholders, with several organisations expressing concerns about transparency, decision-making and the involvement of private investors.
Although the proposal has now been withdrawn, UEFA believes wider governance issues still need to be addressed.
English FA backs UEFA position
The Football Association (FA) of England has publicly supported UEFA’s stance.
“We fully support UEFA’s position. It is time for a full and rigorous review of FIFA leadership and governance to ensure that global football is managed transparently, for the benefit of all 211 member nations,” the FA said.
The latest developments increase pressure on Infantino, who must now rebuild confidence among key stakeholders within international football.
