South African football has been left in shock following the sudden death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away on Saturday 11 July at the age of 25, shortly after representing the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The announcement was made by South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, who expressed his deep sadness over the loss of one of the country’s brightest young talents. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” the minister said, describing Adams as an exceptional player and a remarkable person. The South African Players’ Union and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, saying football had lost one of its own.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his “incredible sadness” following the news, sending condolences to Adams’ family, friends and teammates.

Police have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found on Saturday morning at a house in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in central Cape Town. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

A rising star cut down in his prime

Jayden Adams had just completed his first World Cup campaign with the Bafana Bafana. The midfielder featured in all three group-stage matches, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming on late in the final game against South Korea.

Although he did not play in South Africa’s Round of 32 defeat against Canada, his performances confirmed his growing importance within the national team.

Born in Cape Town, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC in 2020 before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. He had also represented South Africa at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Bafana Bafana finished third.

Former South Africa international Matthew Booth paid tribute to the midfielder, saying his career was only beginning to take off.

“He was a very versatile and intelligent player on the pitch. The next step for him should have been a move to Europe. It is a huge loss, not only of a talented footballer but also of an exceptional person,” Booth said.
