The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire technical staff following the country’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. The decision was announced after a meeting of the federation’s executive committee late on Saturday.
Appointed as Senegal’s head coach in late 2024, Thiaw leaves his position after the Lions of Teranga were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Belgium. His future came under intense scrutiny following the dramatic defeat, with Senegal surrendering a two-goal lead in the final five minutes of regulation time before eventually losing in extra time. The collapse ultimately proved decisive in the federation’s decision to part ways with the coaching staff.
Who Will Coach Senegal Next?
Attention has now shifted to the search for Thiaw’s successor. Several names have emerged in the local media, including Hervé Renard, one of Africa’s most successful coaches, and former Senegal international Habib Beye. However, the name most frequently mentioned is Patrick Vieira. Senegalese outlet Seneweb questioned whether the 1998 FIFA World Cup winner with France is the right man to lead the Lions of Teranga. While Vieira’s stature and reputation could command instant respect within the squad, observers also note that his managerial career has been more mixed than his illustrious playing career.
