Morocco leads Africa’s World Cup 2026 ambitions with renewed global challenge

As the countdown begins for the Coupe du monde 2026, Morocco enters the tournament carrying not only national expectations, but also continental hopes. Following its historic 2022 run to the semi-finals — the first ever for an African nation — Morocco has become a symbol of what African football can achieve on the world stage.

The current squad of 26 players includes nine members of that landmark team, reflecting continuity and experience at the highest level. Once again, Achraf Hakimi stands out as a key leader and one of Africa’s most influential football figures.

Morocco faces a demanding group featuring the Brésil national football team, the Écosse national football team, and the Haïti national football team. The campaign begins against Haiti on June 14 in Boston, before a highly anticipated showdown with Brazil in Miami on June 24.

For African football, Morocco’s journey represents more than competition. It is a continuation of a narrative that began in 2022 — one that challenged global perceptions and proved African teams can compete consistently at the highest level.

As a result, Morocco is widely viewed as a potential flagbearer for the continent once again in 2026, with its performances set to shape how African football is perceived for years to come.
