Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met on Tuesday with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he called for a stronger African presence in global decision-making institutions.

During the meeting, Lavrov stressed the need for reforms at the United Nations, particularly regarding the composition and role of the Security Council.

« We fully support what you have said about significantly strengthening Africa’s role in the global decision-making system, including, of course, African representation on the UN Security Council, which must be reformed through greater participation from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, » Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister also accused former colonial powers of continuing to benefit from Africa’s natural resources, arguing that the continent should have a greater say over its economic and strategic assets.

The discussions come amid ongoing debates over reforming international institutions and increasing representation for developing regions, particularly Africa, which has long called for a permanent voice within the UN Security Council.
