Benin presidential election 2026: Wadagni–Talata duo takes landslide lead in provisional results

The Commission électorale nationale autonome (CENA) has released provisional results of the April 12, 2026 presidential election in Benin, covering 90.55% of votes counted. The ticket led by Romuald Wadagni and Mariam Chabi Talata is in a commanding lead with 94.05% of the vote, pointing to a decisive electoral outcome. However, these figures remain subject to final confirmation by the Cour constitutionnelle du Bénin, which is responsible for proclaiming the official results.

According to provisional data released by the Commission électorale nationale autonome:

  • Registered voters: 7,897,297
  • Total voters: 4,640,354
  • Turnout: 58.75%
  • Valid votes: 4,522,556
  • Invalid ballots: 117,598

Results by ticket:

  • Romuald WadagniMariam Chabi Talata: 4,252,347 votes (94.05%)
  • Paul HounkpèHounwanou: 269,433 votes (5.95%)

Opposition Candidate Concedes Early

Even before the full release of results, opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè, leader of the Force Cauris pour un Bénin Émergent (FCBE), acknowledged defeat. In an official statement, he congratulated Romuald Wadagni and called for political unity beyond partisan divisions.

With a turnout of 58.75%, the election reflects moderate voter engagement. Initial reports suggest the vote took place in a generally peaceful environment. The next crucial step is the validation of results by the Cour constitutionnelle du Bénin. Barring any major developments, the current trend indicates a clear victory for the Wadagni–Talata ticket.
