Cameroon: Paul Biya suffers health scare during national unity day reception

Concern is growing in Cameroon after President Paul Biya reportedly suffered a health scare while presiding over the traditional reception held at the presidential palace following the country’s National Unity Day celebrations on May 20.

According to information reported by Jeune Afrique, the incident occurred during the official reception attended by hundreds of guests after the military and civilian parade in central Yaoundé.

As is customary each year, the main ceremony marking Cameroon’s national holiday took place under the supervision of the head of state before political figures, diplomats, senior military officials, and foreign guests. The celebrations then continued at the Unity Palace, the presidential residence in Yaoundé.

It was during this post-parade gathering that the 93-year-old president reportedly experienced a brief medical discomfort, prompting concern among attendees and members of his close security detail.

No Official Communication Yet

Cameroonian authorities have not issued an official statement detailing the nature of the incident or the current condition of the president. However, several local and regional media outlets have reported that the situation was quickly brought under control and that the reception continued afterward.

The episode has once again revived public debate about the health of Paul Biya, who is one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state. In power since 1982, the Cameroonian leader has frequently faced speculation regarding his physical condition, especially in recent years due to his increasingly rare public appearances and long stays abroad.

Despite recurring rumors, the presidency has consistently maintained that the head of state remains fully capable of carrying out his duties.

Renewed Questions About Political Succession

The reported discomfort comes at a politically sensitive moment for Cameroon as discussions surrounding succession and the country’s political future intensify ahead of upcoming electoral deadlines.

Opposition figures and civil society organizations have repeatedly called for greater transparency regarding the president’s health, arguing that it has become a matter of national interest.

For now, government officials appear determined to minimize the significance of the incident, but the event has already sparked widespread reactions on social media and within political circles across the country.

National Unity Day remains one of Cameroon’s most symbolic annual celebrations, commemorating the country’s reunification and national cohesion. This year’s edition, however, may ultimately be remembered more for the uncertainty surrounding the president’s condition than for the official festivities themselves.
