The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has reaffirmed its confidence in national team head coach Mohamed Ouahbi while intensifying preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The decision was announced following an Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday, July 16, at the FRMF headquarters in Rabat under the chairmanship of President Fouzi Lekjaa.
2030 World Cup a national priority
Opening the meeting, Lekjaa called for a collective effort from all stakeholders in Moroccan football to ensure the successful organization of the 2030 World Cup.
He described the tournament as a strategic national project aligned with the vision of King Mohammed VI, stressing the need for early planning, continuous coordination and close cooperation between the Morocco 2030 Foundation, the FRMF and the country’s national and regional leagues.
Lekjaa also urged the leagues to modernize their working methods and become active contributors to the organization of the tournament while helping strengthen Moroccan football beyond 2030.
Morocco’s World Cup campaign praised
The Executive Committee described the Atlas Lions’ performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as « positive and honorable » after Morocco reached the quarter-finals for the second consecutive edition.
FRMF officials said the achievement reflects the sustained progress of Moroccan football and underlined that it was the result of years of strategic development rather than coincidence.
The federation highlighted Morocco’s rise from 84th in the FIFA rankings in 2018 to sixth in the latest world rankings, describing it as evidence of the country’s remarkable footballing growth.
Officials also noted that Morocco faced several top-10 ranked teams during the tournament, making the quarter-final run even more impressive.
Building on the semi-final appearance in 2022 and the quarter-final finish in 2026, the FRMF said the long-term objective is to consistently compete in the latter stages of future World Cups.
FRMF condemns misinformation
The Executive Committee strongly criticized what it described as false information circulated after Morocco’s quarter-final defeat to France.
Lekjaa expressed surprise that some comments questioned the commitment of the national team players, insisting that every member of the squad represented the country with dedication and professionalism.
He added that the federation had provided the delegation with optimal preparation throughout the tournament, including logistical support for players’ families in recognition of the important role they played in supporting the team.
The FRMF called for greater responsibility in protecting the national team’s environment from misinformation that could negatively affect performances.
Confidence maintained in Mohamed Ouahbi
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Executive Committee officially renewed its confidence in head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, confirming that he will remain in charge of the Atlas Lions.
The federation believes continuity is essential as Morocco prepares for upcoming international competitions and continues its long-term project ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup on home soil.
The FRMF also announced that the remaining items on the meeting’s agenda will be discussed during a second Executive Committee session scheduled for Friday.
