Burundi: Minister found dead, doubts over “Accident”

Burundi’s Minister of Communication and Media, Gabby Bugaga, was found dead early Thursday, April 16, near the capital Bujumbura, in what the government has described as an “accident.”

The minister’s body was discovered beside a vehicle around 10 kilometers north of the city, in the Kivoga palm grove, along a road that is reportedly rarely used at night. However, the official account of a fatal accident has not fully convinced observers, with several unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his death.

Photos circulating on social media and verified by local sources show the minister lifeless inside the vehicle, dressed in a T-shirt and polo shirt, slumped across the front seat. A deep head wound is visible, while the interior of the vehicle appears largely intact.

The vehicle itself, a black pickup truck, shows damage to the rear and right side. The front headlights were also damaged, though the bumper appears unaffected.

While the government has referred to the incident as an “unexpected accident,” calls are growing for an independent investigation. Human rights organizations, including King Umurumdi Freedom, have raised concerns.

In recent hours, numerous questions have emerged on social media, particularly regarding the minister’s presence on that road late at night—and notably alone, without a driver or security detail.

A former journalist with Burundi’s national radio and television, Gabby Bugaga had been appointed Minister of Communication in 2025. The date of his funeral has not yet been announced.
